Security! by Russ

As I bulleted yesterday, Mr. B is doing Vacation Bible School this week and Monday was his first day.

Drop off went OK.  We were greeted by a high energy teenager asking, with great exuberance, if we had seen any of the saints.  (There were folks dressed up like the saints, kind of like some Church theme park.)  This scared the ever-living crap out of the kids.  Miss L bolted behind my legs, while Mr. B inched closer to me.  I explained that he was a touch shy and moved on.

I dropped Mr. B off with some, I think, 16 year old.  Then I reminded her that I needed the I.D. to be able to pick him up.  It was a colored slip of paper with his name on it.  Not exactly what I had in mind, but it beat nothing at all.

Pick up was less organized.  I walk into the all purpose area and the din was deafening.  The older, read adult, group leaders had their heads on swivels, but the younger leaders just looked overwhelmed.  No one was at the door verifying that I should be there.  I had to seek out the group leader to turn in my slip of paper.  Then no one watched me leave.

I don't want to come off as one of those whack job parents, but this is my child we are talking about, and this didn't sit well.  So last night, after talking it over with the Wife, I fired off an email to the director expressing, nicely, my concerns and a couple of simple steps that can be taken to remedy the issue raised.  (I hate it when people complain about something, but then don't offer a solution.  Just a pet peeve.)

I have yet to hear back from the director, not that I expected to this morning, but I hope she will respond and/or implement my solution to the security issue raised.  I would accept the 'or' if I don't get the 'and'.

That kind of stuff has always bothered me too. Esp. when it's chaotic like that. I always think a kid could wander off rather than be kidnapped.

What burns me is that they will make a production of having you sign papers about who can pick up your kid, but then there's no checkpoint at the event to make sure what you signed is followed.

And I'm sure a saint would have freaked my kids out as well!

I wonder if, after drop off was finished, the Saints came marching in?

I think you're right to be concerned and I don't consider myself an over-protective Dad at all. It only takes a second for them to wander off.
